The City of Bellevue is looking to replace its nearly 30-year-old Cole Park playground equipment. As most people are aware, Cole Park lies in the heart of Bellevue and is a very active public park. The park hosts many events throughout the year including Bellevue Community School District and Marquette Catholic’s baseball/softball programs, Bellevue Braves games, Bellevue Youth Soccer and Baseball/Softball, and many community events including but not limited to Heritage Days, Easter Egg Hunt, Reunion on the River, etc.
In May 2017, a Playground Committee Group was formed to help organize fundraisers, search for grants, research equipment ideas, and overall help keep the project moving. To date, some the group’s efforts include helping with the Bellevue Community Club’s annual Reunion on the River, Bender’s Food Stand, Jackson County Pro Rodeo 50/50 raffle, donation tables at local events, Schwan’s Cares, a shopping bus trip in November to Woodfield Mall, can drive, golf best shot, and applying for numerous grants. Since June 2017, the group (along with the City and Bellevue Community Club) have raised roughly $115,000.
The goal is to raise $250,000 by the Summer of 2018 and to have the new equipment installed by the Fall of 2018. Roughly $100,000 will be new equipment, $100,000 will be for a poured rubber turf surface, and $50,000 for installation, lighting, sidewalk boarder, drinking fountain, and any cost overruns. The plan is to have two separate play areas, each geared toward different age groups and physical limitations, along with swings and other free-standing pieces. The poured rubber turf surface and certain equipment pieces will allow the new playground area to meet the Americans with Disabilities requirements.
